Alternatives to the Standard Mouse

Trackballs; joysticks; mouse control using a switch and any reliable body movement; mouse control using head movement only, eye movement only, or via sip/puff mouth actions

Alternative Keyboards

Able to be programmed, operated with one hand, or offer larger keys that are easier to select

Keyguards

Sits on top of keyboards making it easier to select the intended key without activating others

Example: Wireless buttons

Example: Single switch access devices

Example: Tools with higher contrast to improve visibility

Example: One example of an alternative keyboard is the Clevy 2 Keyboard which provides larger keys and a plastic barrier, both of which help prevent users from pressing two keys at a time.

One example of a low vision aid is the Time Timers.  Once set, the time displays a red disc that decreases as time elapses. The size is also such that it is more easily visible from across the room.

Autistictics Playlist: Stim Toys

This YouTube playlist has been compiled by a thirty-something-year-old autistic female in order to showcase some of her favorite affordable stim toys.

This fidget tool has six sides.

 

Each side features a unique way for the user to fidget depending on the user's needs, including clicking, gliding, flipping, breathing, rolling, and spinning.

App: AutisMate

This is an accommodation device to help students become comfortable with their suroundings. 

Learning Needs (LN) that the App Supports:  Customizable app for each user and can be set up to feature a child's home, classroom at school, kitchen, bathroom, etc.

Benefits: It has more than 12,000 built-in symbols and prompts to help children better express their needs in their environment. It can help students become acclimated to their school environment before even stepping foot in the classroom.

This app provides digital resources such as visual schedules, visual countdown timers, choice prompts, and audio narration.

Learning Needs that the App Supports:  Students that struggle with organization, transitions, and schedule changes

Benefits: A simple time schedule board, so when you come into school on Monday, for example, the schedule is written out describing what they will do that day alongside a visual timer.

This app has been developed with music and movement therapy in mind in order to improve brain function. The program, paired with a pad, creates a soothing environment for children shown to improve sleep patterns and reduce stress.

Learning Needs that the App Supports:  For those who struggle to calm themselves - a sensory accommodation.

Benefits: A pillow that can be hooked up to a device and create soothing sounds/vibration environment.
