Technological Resources

“The use of assistive technology paired with effective teaching strategies using visual support systems such as pictures, icons and digital media, and the student’s interests has great promise as a method to provide students with ASD valuable and active literacy opportunities in the inclusive classroom” (Lindsey-Glenn & Gentry, 2008, p. 8-9)

Technological Resources in the Classroom

This section of the website is organized into three different sections:

1. Technology for Sensory Accommodations and Environmental Accommodations for individuals with autism

2. Communication Devices and Applications for individuals with autism

3. Instructional Resources to consider when teaching individuals with autism

Technology can be a powerful resource in a truly inclusive classroom.  Allowing and encouraging students with autism to fully engage and participate to the fullest extent can be assisted and enhanced with the multiple technological resources provided and explained in this section of our website.  As with all our recommendations when considering students with autism, always think about trying out multiple resources, tools, and technologies before determining which resource is best for each student you have in your classroom.  You will note that there are several links to other sites that provide more information on these technologies.  We feel as though the possibilities for technology are endless, and much of the work for providing the appropriate accommodations for your students will come from careful research and consideration of the multiple technologies in the market.

Spectronics

  • Spectronics is a company founded in 1985 by an occupational therapist who was frustrated by the limited availability of many technologies in his area.

  • The wide range of learning technologies are meant to foster real success and inclusion within both educational and community-based settings.

  • In this section overall, you will find resources that you will want to explore and possibly purchase for your classroom and students with autism.  This site has a variety of technological tools and resources that can aid you in this research.  The site carefully categorizes the technologies under headings that allow for convenient searching, and provides technologies for sensory and environmental accommodations, communication, and instructional resources.
